ഉറക്കത്തില്‍ പിച്ചും പേയും പറയുന്ന പോലെ അയാള്‍ നഗരസഭയെയും വൈദ്യുതി വകുപ്പിനെയും തെറി വിളിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു . അപ്പുറത്തെ റൂമില്‍ കിടക്കുന്ന സഹമുറിയന്മാര്‍ കറന്റ്‌ പോയ കാര്യം അറിഞ്ഞ മട്ടില്ല. ഇനി അവന്മാരെ വിളിച്ചു ഉണര്തിയാലോ ? അല്ലേല്‍ വേണ്ട , വെറുതെ എന്തിനാ ഇടി മേടിക്കുനെ. കിടന്നു കിടന്നു ഭ്രാന്ത് പിടിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ കൊലകോല എഴുനേറ്റു. നേരെ ഇടനാഴിയിലേക്ക്‌ നടന്നു . മൊബൈല്‍ ഫോണിന്റെ വെളിച്ചത്തില്‍ അയാള്‍ റിമോട്ട് തപ്പിയെടുത്തു ടി.വി ക്ക് നേരെ പവര്‍ ബട്ടണ്‍ അമര്‍ത്തി .

“മ**&&^, അവന്റെ അമ്മായി അമ്മേടെ #&#*#”. കറന്റ്‌ ഇല്ലാത്ത നേരത്ത് ടി.വി ഓണക്കിയ തന്നെതനെയും പിന്നെ ഒരിക്കല്‍ കൂടി നഗരസഭയെയും വൈദ്യുതി വകുപ്പിനെയും ഉറക്കെ തെറി വിളിച്ചുകൊണ്ടേ അയാള്‍ ബാത്ത് റൂമിലേക്ക്‌ നടന്നു. ബാത്ത് റൂമിലേക്ക്‌ കയറുമ്പോള്‍ ലൈറ്റ്ന്റെ സ്വിച്ച് ഓണക്കാനും ഇറങ്ങുമ്പോള്‍ ലൈറ്റ് ഒഫ്ഫക്കാനും അയാള്‍ മറന്നില്ല .

അപ്പോളും അവിടെ കറന്റ്‌ ഇല്ലായിരുന്നു.

“I don’t have enough money to pay for an ambulance.” She said. It was somewhere around one ‘o’ clock on a cold December night. Her eight year old son lies motionless in the nearby bed.

According to the hospital rules, a dead body cannot be kept in the ward for more than two hours after which it had to be moved to the morgue, situated in the city hospital, half kilometers from here. An ambulance will come and pick it up, but the ambulance fee had to be paid by the victims family. Mom was alone with here son, trying to comfort him, till he breathed his last. She looked helpless. The ambulance was needed not just to take the body to the morgue, but also for the long journey back home. She had either the choice of moving the body to the morgue and then come back with the money and men to take the body back home or to take the body right away to her home.

“I don’t have enough money to pay for an ambulance.” She said,again. The government ambulances are there but they are reserved only for emergencies. They cannot be used for taking the dead. The hospital staff can arrange money to take her son to the morgue but form there she would be by her own. The hospital staff, consisting of 2 nurses and an attendant, in that two bed hospital looked dispassionate than helpless. They were not in a position to allow her to stay. They were not in a position to help her financially, or rather they chose not to.

“Please let me keep him here till the early morning. I’ll take him myself”. The mom begged. Her tone had an unusual calmness. The staff had no options available. They decided to keep the body till morning.

At five in the morning mom woke up, washed her face, packed her stuff, combed and dressed up her son. She went at the hospital staff, half asleep, and told them she’s leaving. She went back to her room, put her son into her left shoulder and put a blanket on top of him. She took her bag in her right hand. She walked slowly through the dark misty morning to the bus station. She needed to catch the early bus. She cant keep her son waiting.
